TOKIO / HONG KONG / SHANGHAI (dpa-AFX) – The stock exchanges in Asia presented themselves a little weaker at the start of the week. The Dow Jones Industrial continued its most recent rally on Friday. Five weeks after the start of the «shutdown» in the USA, US President Donald Trump had announced an agreement with the Democrats to reopen the government. The Dow was unable to maintain its high for the day, however, and profit-taking is emerging in the morning for the start of the week.

According to Thomas Altmann, an analyst at QC Partners, the temporary agreement in the US budget dispute between Trump and the Democrats in the House of Representatives does not create new certainty for investors, but rather prolongs the uncertainty. At the moment, the whole thing looks more like an adjournment than an agreement. A new «shutdown» in just under three weeks should therefore not surprise anyone.

The state media had previously named the Aitken crater as the landing site, which was named after the American astronomer Robert Grant Aitken in 1970. Upon arrival, a robotic vehicle brought along will examine the ground and the structures around the landing point.

Numerous probes from various space nations and twelve US astronauts have landed on the front of the moon. However, the attempt by the Chinese to land on the back is a first. «Chang’e 4» was launched from Earth on December 8th and reached the lunar orbit on December 12th, according to state television.

The background to the wild ups and downs is the recent price turbulence on the trend-setting Wall Street. US President Donald Trump also repeated his sharp criticism of the US Federal Reserve (Fed) on Tuesday (local time). The latter decided last week to raise the key interest rate, which can make stocks less attractive than bonds. On Wednesday, however, traders referred to statements by Trump advisor Kevin Hassett that the job of the head of the central bank, Jerome Powell, was «100 percent» safe despite the ongoing criticism. Another support was the fact that the Christmas business in the USA had apparently not been as good as it had been for several years.

The «Jade Hare 2» rolled off the «Chang’e 4» lander on Thursday evening and touched the surface of the moon for the first time at 10:22 pm (local time), as the Chinese space agency CNSA announced on its website on Friday.

On a photo sent to earth, the vehicle can be seen with the solar cells folded out. Before that, it had driven off a ramp and its tires left its first marks on the loose lunar soil. China had made space history hours before, because it was the first time that a probe touched down on the opposite side of the moon.

60 years ago the Soviet lunar probe «Luna 1» accidentally whizzed past the moon. It should have landed on it on January 4th, 1959. The Soviet Union made the first hard landing on the moon in September 1959 with the «Luna 2» probe, and the first soft landing in 1966 with «Luna 9». In 1969, however, an astronaut from the USA was the first person to step on the earth’s satellite.

Now, with the «Chang’e 4», China has successfully started a particularly demanding mission, because no direct radio link to earth can be established on the back of the moon. The Chinese had therefore previously placed a transmission satellite in a corresponding position. China has further plans and plans to send its first astronaut to the moon in 2030. In 2018, China sent more missiles into orbit for the first time than any other country.

China’s spacecraft are named after an old legend according to which the «jade bunny» (yutu) keeps the moon fairy «Chang’e» company on the earth’s satellite.

The General Director of the European Space Agency Esa, Jan Wörner, congratulated China on the moon landing and called for stronger international cooperation in space. «In geopolitical terms, space travel can serve as a role model,» said Wörner in Darmstadt of the German press agency dpa. The landing of «Chang’e 4» has impressively demonstrated how ambitious the Chinese space program is. A stronger cooperation could be worthwhile for all sides.

«I am sure that the Chinese will share their new knowledge with other countries,» added Wörner. Esa is already cooperating with China in space travel. As an example, he cited the collaboration between Esa and the Asian country on the «Chang’e 5» space probe. This will bring rock samples from the moon to earth this year.

The Esa director general said that isolation could not be used to master major challenges. In contrast to the times of the East-West conflict, it was recognized that space travel offered the opportunity for international cooperation.

On the moon, for example, people could research the conditions for future space missions to Mars, for example, said Wörner. This is also shown by the recent Chinese mission. So «Chang’e 4» also loaded seeds. The researchers first want to test whether it is possible to grow vegetables in a closed environment with the low gravity of the moon’s surface.

Also planned are experiments with low radio frequencies for the «Chang’e 4» mission. Without the earth’s atmosphere and other disturbances, astronomers can better pick up signals and hope for new knowledge about the formation of stars.

The University of Kiel is also involved in the mission with a project. The researchers want to use a special measuring device to study neutron radiation on the moon so that astronauts can be better protected from radiation exposure in the future.

Beijing (dpa) – China’s President Xi Jinping wants to force the «reunification» with the democratic Taiwan, if necessary by force. China must and will be reunified, said Xi Jinping in a speech in Beijing, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

An independent Taiwan contradicts the trend of history and will lead to a dead end. China wants to achieve peaceful reunification, but leaves «no room for separatist activities,» said Xi Jinping. «We make no promise not to use force and reserve the right to take whatever means necessary.»

The dispute over the status of Taiwan goes back to the civil war in China when the troops of the national Chinese Kuomintang fled to Taiwan after their defeat by Mao’s communists. Since the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949, Beijing has viewed the island republic, which holds democratic elections, as its own territory and threatens to recapture it.

Beijing attacks Australia: when will China’s «naked aggression» hit Germany?

Until 1971 Taipei had represented China in the United Nations and thus also in the World Security Council, before Beijing took over this role by resolution of the UN General Assembly. Beijing recently intensified the international isolation of Taiwan. Of the two dozen mostly smaller states that had diplomatically recognized Taiwan, Beijing was able to attract five more to its side.

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-Wen on Wednesday rejected the Beijing threat.
